You’re invited to join our thrilling return to the spectacular Chugach Range of Alaska, where massive peaks of untracked powder are waiting for you. We’re enjoying five beautiful nights at the Alyeska Resort, including two days of heli skiing / snowboarding with the impeccable Chugach Powder Guides.

This is our third heli skiing / heli snowboarding trip, and the BUMS are hooked! Imagine rising off the ground in a state-of-the-art helicopter to journey far beyond the chair lifts, over the breathtaking heights and spectacular valleys of the Chugach Mountains. There are stunning slopes and awe-inspiring vistas stretching in every direction; it's the purest form of skiing and snowboarding you can imagine.

One great advantage of this destination: in addition to two days of heli, you’ll enjoy two days to explore the incredible lift-serviced terrain at one of the world’s snowiest resorts. And if you like, you can request to stand by for a third day of heli skiing and snowboarding.

Space on this trip is very limited, and it is now sold out.

We reserve the right to cancel, reschedule, or make changes in the trip itinerary as a result of weather or safety considerations or as otherwise deemed necessary or advisable. If your trip is cancelled due to weather, snow, or mountain conditions, or circumstances beyond our control, you will receive a credit toward a future trip. All trip credits may be applied to any future SKI BUMS trip.

SKI BUMS is not responsible for the cost of any additional expenses that you may incur as a result of trip rescheduling or cancellation (airline ticketing fees, etc.).

To use a credit for a future deposit or payment, please

Get in on the action
Through November 1, you may cancel your spot at any time and receive a full refund. After November 1, the following cancellation fees apply:

For cancellations received from November 2 - December 31, $1000 fee. After January 1st, 2018: no refund.

In order to obtain our bulk group discounts, we must agree to a very strict cancellation policy. It's the nature of group travel. Think of your SKI BUMS booking as you would an airline reservation; even we find someone to take your place,
the cancellation fees still apply.

If you buy travel insurance, you can still receive a refund for a cancelled SKI BUMS trip.

To cancel your SKI BUMS trip, click here >
Travel insurance
Buy travel insurance. We cannot stress this enough.

A travel insurer can provide a refund even when SKI BUMS cannot. In the circumstance that you need to cancel your trip because of work or health reasons, you should purchase travel insurance within 30 days of your initial trip deposit.

Even if you purchase travel insurance after this date, some coverage is much better than no coverage at all. Our cancellation policy is strict, and after cancellation fees kick in, a travel insurer may be your only chance for a full refund.

There are many travel insurers, and policies are very affordable. We especially recommend, and suggest you add the sports package to cover skiing & snowboarding activity.

Lift tickets
Your trip includes a two day pass for the Alyeska Resort.

We’ll begin our trip with two days of skiing and riding the lift-serviced areas of Alyeska on Thursday and Friday. If you are not heli skiing / snowboarding, you can opt to add an additional 2-days to your lift ticket for $90 USD.

If you or your travel partner do not ski or snowboard — or if you have a season pass — we can remove the lift tickets from our package. Contact us to make arrangements.
Travel portfolio
About a month before we travel, all participants will submit a Travel Portfolio, where we'll collect your flight information, dietary restrictions, roommate requests, emergency contact info, skill level, and other pertinent details. We'll email everyone and post the link here when it's time to submit it.
Skill levels
SKI BUMS designs our season for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, but we make specific recommendations for each trip. On ALL SKI BUMS trips, we begin by dividing into skill level groups so you can identify those who enjoy the same terrain that you do.

See how our groups work >

We recommend our HELI days for advanced and expert skiers and boarders only. If you are only skiing / riding at the resort, we recommend this trip for intermediate through experts.

One's definition of “advanced / expert" is deeply subjective, of course. For our purposes, here's what we mean:

When visiting Western North American or European resorts, no in-bounds terrain is beyond your comfort or ability level. You're very confident, even on the steepest runs. You've got excellent command no matter what the snow surface may be: deep powder, mixed crud, hardpack, or ice. You enjoy the challenge of making tight turns through trees or moguls. You've got clean, good form, you keep a quick pace, and you've got enough endurance to maintain a full day on the mountain.

Not sure if this is you? Contact us — we’re happy to talk it through with you.
If you would like to book additional nights at Alyeska, contact the hotel directly. You’ll pay the hotel directly for any additional nights that you book.

As for additional nights and accommodations, SKI BUMS trip leaders are happy to offer advice, but we cannot book additional nights for you, and we will not be on hand to offer travel assistance beyond the official dates of our itinerary.

Air transportation
Ground Transportation
Air transportation is not included. Read these recommendations closely before buying airfare. This trip requires airfare to Anchorage, plus ground transfers to the town of Girdwood.

You'll want to be smart and cautious about buying your airfare, especially if you're flying from eastern North America. Be sure to schedule your return flight with a close eye on the timing; many departures to the East Coast are red-eye flights. To prepare for this, our rooms are ours through check-out at 11 AM on Monday, April 2nd.

RECOMMENDATIONS | ARRIVAL: our hotel rooms are guaranteed after 4 PM. We suggest you arrive in Anchorage on Wednesday March 28th. Many flights arrive in the evening hours. Our trip officially begins with a meet & greet at 9:30 PM at our hotel. | DEPARTURE: our trip itinerary officially ends after apres-ski on Sunday April 1st. Many will book late night departures for the late hours of Sunday, but if you’d like to stay in the hotel Sunday night and depart on Monday, the room is yours to use.

Travel schedule
Alyeska Resort is about a 45-minute drive from the Anchorage airport. Guests of The Hotel Alyeska receive a special rate with Four Seasons Transportation Group. Vans and sedans are available 24 hours a day seven days a week with advanced reservations. Rates start at $125 one-way. Reservations can be made through Alyeska Resort’s Front Desk; please make your reservation at least 2 weeks before our arrival date.

If you prefer, you can rent a car or
make other transportation arrangements.

Resort overview
One tremendous advantage for our trip: our home base is Alyeska Resort, the largest ski area in Alaska. Beyond our days in the heli, we’ll enjoy Alyeska's lift-served areas, which includes a 2,500 vertical drop, big bowls, fir tree glades and fantastic top-to-bottom runs.

Alyeska's unique in many ways; it averages a whopping 650 inches of snow each season, making it one of the snowiest ski resorts in the world. And fascinatingly, although much of the terrain lies above the tree line, the top peak is just 3,939 feet. You can enjoy a big mountain experience without the threat of altitude sickness. At the end of March, the days are long, and the conditions are dreamy.

The resort is home to the only 4-diamond AAA hotel in Alaska, which we'll call home for the week. (see Lodging, below). And it's easy to get here: it's located just 40 miles from Anchorage airport.

Who's coming on the trip? Find out by joining our special SKI BUMS Alaska Facebook Group. Whether you're simply curious about signing up or you're already on board, everyone's welcome to join this Facebook group. Feel free to invite friends, too -- it's a cool way to begin learning names of the skiers and boarders who you'll meet when we're in Alaska! if you decide not to join us, we'll remove you from the group before the trip begins.

In advance of the trip, the BUMS use this group to share travel plans and coordinate meet ups for ground transfers. During and after the trip, they share pics and messages with one another. You'll see posts like "who's on the 1 PM flight into Anchorage?” and "who's up for first chair tomorrow?"

Weather history
Of course, weather is impossible to predict, but SKI BUMS plans our trips with an eye on weather history. That’s especially true here. For a well-planned heli trip in Alaska, you want to enjoy good snow coverage with fewer stormy days. Helicopters don’t fly when it’s windy and snowing. The end of March is a great time to be here; historically, sunny weather delivers ideal conditions for flying. You can expect dry powder snow at high altitudes in the heli, and expect more spring-like corn snow at lower altitudes when we’re resort skiing.

Our rooms at Alyeska are guaranteed after 4 PM on Wednesday the 28th. After arriving at the resort, you'll visit the Front Desk and check in under your name, just as you would at any hotel. If you arrive early, the hotel can store luggage until your room is available.

After checking in, you'll want to explore the resort a bit, get acquainted and pick up any rental ski / snowboard equipment. There's convenient ski and snowboard storage in the hotel.
Check in
Our trip officially begins with a meet & greet welcome reception at 9:30 PM in the hotel. You won't want to miss this; you'll get your lift passes, information about the week and meet your fellow Alaska BUMS!

Heads up
Our trip leaders design an itinerary that highlights the best spots around to make sure you don't miss out on any of the fun. It's published in an emailed handout and updated on a devoted Twitter feed, with up-to-the-minute announcements you can receive on your cell phone.

The on-mountain adventure begins bright and early on Thursday. We divide into skill level groups that help you identify the other skiers and snowboarders who enjoy the same terrain that you do, and then we divide and conquer the mountain! Learn about our skill level groups. >

In general, you'll spend most of the day in a smallish group of four or five skiers or boarders -- but that's up to you. The BUMS are a social crowd, so it's always easy to find others to join in the fun. We meet as a group for lunches and après-ski and dine together in the evenings.

On our heli days, we’ll break up into smaller groups of 4 skiers and boarders based on skill level. The guides will determine our groupings based on their expertise; we’ll defer to them. If you have a friend who skis / boards at your same pace & skill level, they’ll keep this in mind.

It's common to mix it up with a few different groups throughout the trip. During our resort days, if you’d like some down time, you can enjoy the indoor pool or spend time at the spa. This is your vacation, so you're always free to break away and do your own thing.

Learn more about how SKI BUMS trips work >
You must have a cell phone that will work while we are in Alaska. It will need to be able to receive domestic SMS text messages, even when you are not on Wi-Fi.

Trip leaders send up-to-the-minute text message alerts with itinerary information, transportation pickup times, lunch locations, weather advisories, and more. Additionally, the other trip participants text one another to coordinate their plans on the mountain. In general, all Canadian and American carriers phones will work while in Alaska, but you’d be smart to confirm it with your cell phone carrier in advance.

View our communications guide for important information >
On the mountain: you should arrive in Alaska with all your skiing & snowboarding apparel. SKI BUMS requires our trip participants to wear helmets while skiing & riding. See our helpful guide, How to Dress for the Mountain, for suggestions. Alyeska has well-equipped gear & apparel shops, but prices will be a bit elevated, so pack wisely.

Off the mountain: all our events are casual dress. As you can pretty easily see, the BUMS are a casual, laid-back crowd; we aren't flashy. Be yourself, and be comfortable -- just as you would on any skiing / snowboarding trip.

A few vital packing tips:

Pack your skiing and snowboarding apparel in your carry on bag. Delayed luggage can arrive three days late; you won't want to have to buy all new stuff to make it onto the mountain.
+ Be sure to pack
winter wear shoes with a good tread; expect snowy, icy streets.
+ Don't forget
sunscreen for the high-altitude UV exposure, and a swimsuit for the spa.

SKI BUMS detailed trip itineraries are designed to be viewed on any smart phone. Additionally, our trip leaders send up-to-the-minute alerts that you'll receive on your phone via SMS text messaging. It allows us to keep you in the loop and make smart adjustments based on the weather. View one of the daily itineraries from our 2015 trip >

For this reason, you MUST have a cell phone that will work while we're in Alaska.

We limit the number of participants for all SKI BUMS trips. This trip is now SOLD OUT and has reached maximum capacity.

All registered SKI BUMS members are invited to add their name to our wait list — there’s no obligation. We receive cancellations for every trip, and when a new opening becomes available, we will contact our members by phone and email in the order that you’ve added your name to our list. To add your name, be sure you’ve got a current SKI BUMS membership. Membership is free.

We design all our trips for a specific number of people.
Our trip includes a $100 guest card which you may apply toward breakfasts or meals on property, plus a multi-course gourmet dinner at the stylish, delicious Seven Glaciers restaurant at Alyeska Resort. We can easily accommodate vegetarians, those with allergies or special diets.

For our lunches, we'll have suggested meet up spots for lunch during our resort days, and a complimentary soup & sandwich lunch during our days in the heli. The food is tasty here — with many on site restaurants to choose from, including delicious fresh Alaskan seafood — but chances are good that you’ll remember the views more than whatever you happened to eat!
We are happy to arrange roommates for you. Typically, half of our participants ask us to match them up with a roommate. We'll ask a few easy questions and accommodate your preferences.

If you prefer your own room, you may select a single occupancy. We collect the single occupancy supplement when you sign up (View "Pricing & Payment" below). Please note: there are only a small number of single occupancy slots available. Single occupancies tend to sell out very quickly.
Our home for the week is the lovely Hotel Alyeska, the only AAA 4-diamond resort in the state. Originally built in 1994, this recently renovated property has an indoor pool, a full-service spa, award-winning restaurants, complimentary wi-fi and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. It’s classy and cool.

And the Front Desk even offers to give you a wake-up phone call overnight if the Northern Lights begin dancing in the vast Alaskan sky.

Additional winter activities include cross country skiing, flightseeing, snowshoeing, ice skating, snow machining, dog sledding, and a complete fitness center with an indoor lap pool, weight room, sauna, 16 person whirlpool, and more. On site food and beverage outlets are plentiful, including the panoramic Seven Glaciers restaurant, Bore Tide Deli and Bar; the Sakura Sushi Bar; the Pond Cafe; the Tramway Café; the Sitzmark Bar and Grill and the Aurora Bar and Grill.

Although the Alyeska Resort is its own self-contained resort village, you’ll find everything you need here. Plus, the small town of Girdwood is just a few minutes away.

Take note: our checkout date is Monday, April 2nd. See “Travel Schedule” for more details.

At signup, you may select double occupancy or upgrade to single occupancy ($500 supplement).
Getting around
Cars aren't necessary while we're at Alyeska. You’ll find just about everything you need at the resort, and taxis are available for small trips into nearby Girdwood.

Chucagh Powder Guides
After knocking our socks off a few years ago, we’re very happy to return to one world's most well known and highly respected heli ski operators, Chugach Powder Guides. In operation since 1997, CPG has built a solid reputation through quality guides, a commitment to safety and an outstanding track record. CPG guides will accompany each group of skiers and snowboarders from beginning to end, providing avalanche safety and making sure that we stay safe on the mountain.

CPG blew us away in 2014; their guides are super fun, low-key, and supremely gay friendly. They even surprised us one morning by Pride-themed t-shirts — just to show their support.
Very cool.

CPG is reserving seats for us for two single-day heli adventures, on Saturday and Sunday. Here’s what’s included in our package:

+ 16,000 - 18,000 vertical feet of heli skiing / boarding per day
+ The guidance of CPG’s expert guides
+ Safety training and equipment, including shovels, probes, beacons
+ Lunch each day
+ Snowcat backup (if weather won’t permit us to fly)

If you’d like, you may prepay to stand by for an additional day of heli skiing / boarding on Friday. The standby price is $1275. If no seat becomes available, this payment is refunded to you.

Please note: our heli seat reservations are limited. On our last heli trip, our seats sold out quickly. If you do not include heli at signup, we cannot guarantee availability at a later date.

If you or your travel partner would prefer not to heli ski / board, you may remove our days of heli from the package. At signup, indicate that you are not joining our heli. We’ll remove $2875 from the package price. In its place, you may add an additional two days to your lift ticket for $90 USD.

Gear & euipment rental
About half of our participants will rent skis or snowboards. For our two heli days, you can add powder skis or powder board demo rentals for $50 per day.
